About a week ago, I started working on a background scene for a little one-page comic I’ve been slacking on. What better way to procrastinate completion than by deciding to spend a few hours drawing my bedroom wall? I shared the rough draft (done in Paper on the iPad) on Twitter:
I emailed the draft to myself and then used it as a guide in photoshop to draw the actual bookshelves. Here’s a series of progress shots (if you follow me on Twitter, you’ve seen the progress shots, so you’re welcome to scroll to the bottom for the finished piece):
Same one as above, except I turned off the guide layer so you can see better what I’ve actually drawn on the final so far:
Then I drew a zillion perfectly rectangular books:
Some book colors:
Needs more books, and also some texturing on the carpet to make it more carpet-ish:
Also, yes. My bedroom walls are seriously a dusty rose and smurf-massacre blue.
Phew! That’s a lot of books, guys. Last, I filled in the last few books, colored them, shaded the walls, books, and bookshelves; added photos (I threw a sponge filter on them so it wasn’t so jarring), and stuck a random time on the clock. The time is a separate layer (actually, the clock is too, as well as that weird oval frame I’m not completely happy with) so it’ll be easy to change out as need be (if ever). I could even swap out the photos if I wanted for some reason, since each one is, you guessed it, on its own layer. I really, really love layers.
So, finally, here’s the last one! I’m pretty pleased with it, but drawing things and places is definitely a skill I need a lot of work on. Practice, practice, practice!
