There’s a certain amount of luck and serendipity in anything we do, but it’s seldom the key factor. I hear it most as a dismissal of the success of writers and other creatives. Sure, Famous Actor is good, but it takes a lot of luck to make it big!
You know what else it takes? Talent, perseverance, educating yourself on how to navigate a career path, not being an asshole when you meet influential people, and usually many years of hard work. A blogger who’s been writing every day, networking, and participating, and then writes a NYT best seller isn’t just lucky.
If you find yourself claiming they are, why? If it makes you feel better to think that way, maybe you should let yourself get uncomfortable for a bit and see where it takes you. Maybe you’ll find something better than waiting to be lucky.
