Being a twit, I took this photo at the Denver Zoo and didn’t bother to even check the animal information sign in front of this guy’s habitat. It’s a fox, duh. We see those little cuties running around here all the time.
A few weeks ago, I was visiting at my mum’s (Gramma’s) house and I said, “Oh, neat! There’s a fox running down your street,” and tried to point it out to Pixie. Gramma says, “Ah, maybe that’s where the neighbor’s cat went…”
So, the well-informed reader may have already figured out what is wrong with this photo. The thing that I didn’t figure out until I went to the zoo’s website to grab the online animal info page:
That is not a fox.
The beautiful red-head here is actually a Maned Wolf. And you know what?
He’s not actually a wolf, either.
Apparently they are wild dogs from South America and are not related to either wolves or foxes, at least not any moreso than any other dog. And now I know.
I also now know to stop being a lazy, gawking twit and actually read the animal information if I’m going to go to the zoo. LESSON LEARNED.
Well played, Denver Zoo. Well played.
